THE PUBLIC SINGER Southern women also went to hear singers such as Anna Bishop—quite surprising, considering that Bishop abandoned her husband (composer Sir Henry Bishop) and toured Europe and America with her accompanist (famous harpist Nicholas Bochsa), the implication being that they lived together as man and wife, even though she had not divorced her husband. 1). Nor apparently did it hinder their attendance at her concerts, which were particularly popular in Charleston. Anna Rivière Bishop (1810–84) came to the United States in 1847.

She arrived with Robert-Nicholas-Charles Bochsa (1789–1856), the man for whom she had left her husband and three children in 1839. He was also a convicted forger. Such presumably negative associations were hidden by Bishop’s “fine form,” which she covered in beautiful gowns and jewelry, and by a generally pleasing soprano voice. She toured the South, including stops in Charleston, Savannah, New Orleans, Columbus, and Mobile. These concerts drew large crowds. In Mobile, she sang Norma in Italian, and then Linda di Chamounix and La sonnambula in English.
